Alfredo Costa Monteiro / A-I-R SANATORIUM OF SOUND 2018

Alfredo Costa Monteiro is another artist, after Ryoko Akama, invited to Sokołowsko jointly with Artist-in-Residence Programme A-i-R Wro. Monteiro is an is an audiovisual artist born in Portugal, currently living in Barcelona. He studied sculpture/multimedia at Fine Art school in Paris with Christian Boltanski. Since 1992 his work stands somewhere between sound art, visual art and sound poetry . His installations and sound pieces, all of a low-fi character, have in common an interest for unstable processes, where the manipulation of objects as instruments or instruments as objects has a strong phenomenological aspect.

Accustomed to working on the extremes of sound, ranging from acoustic solos for paper, almost inaudible to performances where volume acquires a literally physical presence, he has been creating since 2001 different projects, using each time a different instrumentation as prepared accordion, turntable, prepared guitar, electro-acoustic devices, synthesisers or resonant objects, in order to give these projects different identities and directions.

In sound poetry, he works on the musicality of language, with its phonetic content, but always maintaining a balance with semantics. His poems are generally noisy and multilingual (mainly in Spanish, Portuguese and French, but also in Catalan and English). He uses combinatorial systems based on common sounds to these different languages, in order to create multiple meanings that seek confusion and often challenge comprehension.

His study visit in Sokołowsko, organised in the framework of A-i-R Sanatorium of Sound Sokołowsko 2018, will include development of his art practice as well as sound workshops entitled „Sound improvisation : strategies for Here and Now”. Effect of his work will be presented during the fouth dition of the „Sanatorium of Sound” festival.
